Hotel NH Cartagena Urban Royal
We stayed at Hotel NH Cartagena for 5 nights at the end of our Colombian honeymoon. The hotel is located at Plaza de los Coches, which is very active with tourists, tour companies and street vendors. Most of the hotel staff also speaks English so check-in was a breeze. We booked our room through Priceline and when we arrived, they said they didn’t have our room type available. They put us in a twin room for 1 night and then switched us over to a Superior room the other nights. The rooms feature everything you will need for a comfortable stay, including air conditioning. If you are wanting a guaranteed hot shower though, this is not the place. The water was either freezing, lukewarm or boiling hot. The showers take a very long time to warm up. Some of the rooms face Plaza de los Coches, which is very noisy everyday after sunset and till about 3 am. I would not choose this hotel if you are a light sleeper. You will hear everything from music, police sirens, loud conversations and even fireworks. The noise didn’t bother us and it was interesting to see how lively the Plaza was!

The hotel offers free breakfast but it is a very disappointing breakfast. The dining room is nice, with windows on all walls and comfortable chairs. The breakfast featured made to order eggs, very tiny croissants and various meat slices. The hotel wasn’t cheap so I was expecting a better breakfast spread. They have a menu of breakfast foods but they aren’t included in the inclusive breakfast price. There are breakfast places within walking distance of the hotel so we only ate the hotel breakfast once.

The best part about this hotel is the rooftop pool. The pool was typically empty, which surprised me since it is so nice. It overlooks Cartagena and you can see as far as Bocagrande. We watched a lightning storm from the pool and it was one of the most memorable parts of the entire trip. I recommend this hotel if you are looking for a clean and centrally located hotel within the walls of Cartagena.
